Building a high-converting website for your client

Every agency says they build "high converting" websites. Almost none of them do.

Here's what actually happens. The brief goes out. Someone builds a beautiful homepage. A considered colour palette, five sections about "who we are". Then somewhere near the bottom, buried under all that polish, sits a contact form nobody tested.

That's not a conversion website. That's a portfolio piece with a form bolted on.

Conversion isn't a design problem

It's a courage problem. Most sites don't convert because nobody on the project was brave enough to ask for the sale. Every button says "Learn more" instead of "Book a call". Every headline talks about values instead of results.

A website that converts is rude by comparison. It tells the visitor exactly what to do next, on every page, without apologising for it.

What actually moves the needle

Forget the checklist you've read a hundred times. Here's the one that matters.

Say the thing that gets you hired. Not "we help businesses grow". The actual reason a client picks you over the agency next door. If your homepage could belong to any studio in the country, it's not doing its job.

Make the next step obvious and singular. One action per page. Pick the one thing you want someone to do and design everything around it.

Use real proof, not vibes. A logo wall isn't proof. A case study with a number in it is. If you can't point to an outcome, don't pretend you can.

None of this is complicated. It's just uncomfortable, because it means committing to a position instead of hiding behind good typography.

The real test

Ask this about every page on the site. If a stranger landed here with zero context, would they know exactly what to do next within five seconds?

If the answer's no, the design didn't fail. The nerve did.
